In Fuerteventura the celebrations, which are revelled, are mainly connected with the patron saint of the respective places. New clothes are being bought for these celebrations, the fronts of the houses are embellished, flags and wreaths are hung up at the roads and places, special meals will be prepared, plays and meetings are organized, in order to provide a diversion for the inhabitants. During these celebrations the typical songs of the island (isas, folías, seguidillas and malagueñas) are to be heard, while the singing mixes itself with the dances.
The celebrations turn normally around a mass in honour of the protection patron or the Patron saint, followed by an organized procession. Normally still further pious and festive are organized, whereby the population is focussed.
One of the celebrations, which are very popular in recent time, is the Carnival. In the months of February and March it is celebrated in different cities on Fuerteventura, whereby the Carnival in Puerto de Rosario, in Gran Tarajal and Corralejo only by the multiplicity of the participants is to be emphasized. Normally during these celebrations, like in other countries, satires are sung and represented about public personalities or current situations in the society are being criticized. An omitted ambiance, partly exotic and erotic costumes, as well as a certain lack of restraint control, in which some live out a part of themselves, which remains hidden during the year. Festive pilgrimages are also on Fuerteventura one of the most popular events, which enjoy always a large participation and which have their origin in the cultural legacy of the island. The Pilgrimage of La Peña and of Taquito in El Cardón is most well-known.
The Pilgrimage of la Peña, the most importantly outstanding, celebrated on third Saturday in September in the fruitful vale of Vega de Río Palmas. For this Pilgrimage the Romeros (the pilgrims) arrive from all parts of Fuerteventura in order to state their promises to the virgin de la Peña (the rock), the Patron saint of the island. During the Pilgrimage of Taquito, which is celebrated in El Cardón, the people lift the picture of the virgin on their shoulders, in order to run with it to the mountain summit, at any time accompanied by dance and music. Once arrived on the mountain, the virgin is put into a cave and a popular grill celebration starts, which means the continuation of the celebration. Another important celebration is in honours of the virgin of Carmen (the Patron saint of the sea), which particularly is celebrated extensively in the ports of Corralejo and Morro Jable on each 16th of July.
